May

  • Glaucidium palmatum

(Revised 6 Jan 2016)
The vigorous signs of a northern garden awakening in spring are something very special to northern gardeners. You can see, hear, smell and feel the freshness and liveliness of spring in May (even in the rain). May always has that renewed look of the year for the garden. Time to enjoy the arrival of waves of flowers and leaves flourishing.
We are particularly eager to see the return of maples with beautiful spring colours, and flowering dogwood and Eastern Redbud etc in flower.
We can still have hard frost in the first 2-3 weeks of May. This can sometimes damage the flower buds of May flowering trees (especially those that are borderline hardy to our area), and some perennials like heucheras resulting in big disappointment.
