Graceful Grasses

  • Penniseteum 'Karley Rose' in August

(Revised 5 Jan 2016)
I used them for their graceful contrast with the stately elegance of conifers, as support structures for perennials, and their contributions to add grace to paths or steps. For those with stable winter structures, I also keep them for their winter looks and for providing added winter wind protections for more tender plants nearby. Although I am not obsessed with them, they have gradually become an integral part of most beds.
Most of the grasses I grow are still in ‘under observation’ status in my garden. I would like to would like to learn more about their relative shade tolerance characteristics. Some of their clumps appear to expand fast, and are painful to divide. Some can be weedy self-sowing. They are generally trouble free disease-wise, and not demanding in their culture.
You can see more of them in the sub-pages listed in the menu list in the right sidebar.
The grasses I tried so far are: (Unfortunately, some of them lost their name tags over the years. Some do not have sufficient unique characteristics for identification (meaning my lack of expertise), and are declared as ‘Lost in the garden’ in their database statuses.)
