Rhododendrons & Friends

(Revised 11 Feb 2011)
Growing and appreciating rhododendrons here are quite different from gardens in warmer zones where they can grow like weeds. Here, it can be a challenge; both our soil and climate are not kind to them, but we will live, and want to play with them anyway. I must admit that, with the way I neglect my rhodos, any rhodos that can survive in my garden almost anyone else can grow them.

Azalea ‘Cascade’

I have this one for many years. It almost perished completely in the second year, but came back after I replanted it.

Rhododendron ‘Vulcan’

This rhodo may not be fullly hardy here. I will enjoy it while it lasts.

Rhododendron ‘Blue Nose’?

I need to check the tag fro the correct name. I was told that this one is extremely hardy. Would be interesting to try it out at the cottage where it is zone 4b.

Rhododendron ‘Herbert’

This is my third one. The previous two last quite a while. I promised not to neglect it this time.

Rhododendron ‘Anneke Plazek’

This is a very reliable and forgiving friend.

Rhododendron ‘April Rose’

This is a popular rhodo in this area.

Rhododrndron ‘Calsap’

This is a very common rhodo here. We like it because of its colour and its forgiving good nature.

Rhododendron ‘Crete’

I particularly like the apple blossom pink when it starts to bloom. It is a very forgiving and compact little rhodo.

Rhododendron ‘Girard’s Scarlet’

This rhodo appears to be just barely hardy here, but I have not attempted to fuss over some winter protection so far (other than the deck sheltering it somewhat from the south). I have moved it into a more sheltered location last year.

Rhododendron ‘Hong Kong’

Its somewhat opal white flowers give you a cool feeling.

Rhododendron ‘Karens’

Two third of this rhodo was chewed by rabbit a year a go, and it is still struggling to recover.

Rhododendron ‘Koromo Shikibu’

This is a delicate and elegant looking rhodo; quite distinct from the usually luxurious rhodo look.

Rhododendron ‘Mary Fleming’

This is an old favourite; cool cream colour with a touch of warm red tone. It is compact an neat, and looks appropriate in any corner.

Rhododendron ‘Mother’s Day’

OK it is a bit too bright, but I think I can find a good place for it eventually.

Rhododendron who?

Over the years, many of the rhodos in our garden have lost their identities, mostly because of my sloppiness. Hopefully, I will have more time to track down their IDs in the near future.
