Heuchera

(Revised 5 Feb 2011)
In terms of ornamental attributes, usefulness, versatility, and maintenance I would consider Heucheras as one of the most valuable perennials in our garden; yes I am bias. Heuchera has an interesting and wide colour range, a compact neat habit, beautiful textures, and is semi-evergreen. The spikes of tinny heuchera flowers are useful for creating a feel of elegant and airy space in the flower beds or along a path. Depending on the varieties, it can be grown in full sun to almost full shade. They maintain a presentable look from early spring into snow fall.

As far as practicable, I tried to give each Heuchera a maximum amount of light the particular variety can take but not more (for good colours and health). The mature size and vigor vary widely for different varieties of Heuchera. There are insufficient information in books or reliable information on the internet to help me on these. So the only practical solution is by trials and errors myself.

Many varieties are available here (fortunately) because it is currently a ‘fashion’ perennial with new varieties coming out every year. I often find that the appearance of a heuchera in the catalog is deceiving. Quite a few of them are much more ornamental in the garden than they look in the catalog. Also, I believe some of the heucheras that we have were mis-tagged by the suppliers, and we are hoping that over time we can gradually sort them out.
You can see some of our collection in the sub-pages listed under Heuchera in the sidebar to the right.

Heucheras from seeds

I sowed some Heuchera seeds I collected from the garden many years ago. Some of the seedlings can be very pretty.
