Acanthus
(Draft initial revision 31 Jan 2011)
I sowed some seeds a few years ago, and ended up with one plant. It has a relatively large structure for a perennial; an attribute that can be exploited in garden composition. It was doing fine in a fair bit of shade. My understanding is it can take very bad soil and hard to remove. So far, it has not spread in any significant way. May be the cold weather here keeps it in check, or may be I am yet to be surprised.
